By March, many skiers start to believe winter in the Sierras is winding down. Storms become less frequent, the days grow longer and attention turns to warmer weather and spring sports. But those who know the mountains well understand that some of the best skiing of the season is just beginning.
Spring in Tahoe has a rhythm all its own. After months of storms, the snowpack settles into smooth, consistent conditions.
Longer days are part of the magic. Mornings start a little slower, lift laps stretch later into the afternoon and there’s finally time to linger over lunch on a sunny deck with the Sierras stretching out in every direction.
One of our favorite places to enjoy spring skiing is Palisades Tahoe. By this time of year, the winter crowds have thinned, lift lines are shorter and the pace of the mountain feels refreshingly relaxed. Even the food lines move a little faster and midweek parking becomes easy and often can find a spot closer to the village.
And then there’s the reward at the end of the day. Few traditions feel more timeless than spring après ski at Le Chamois. On a sunny afternoon you might find a chair outside, dogs wandering nearby, skiers still in their boots and a cold, frothy beverage in hand. There may even be time to stop by the lake before the sun dips behind the peaks.
Spring skiing does come with a small secret: timing matters. Cool nights firm the snow, and the morning sun gradually softens it into ideal carving conditions. Mid-morning through early afternoon is often the sweet spot.
It’s also the time of year when a proper tune makes all the difference. Warmer snow can create more friction on ski bases and a fresh spring wax helps skis glide the way they should.
Perhaps the best part of spring skiing, though, is simply the feeling. The mountains are still blanketed in snow, but the air is warmer, the light softer and the pace more relaxed. Skiing in a shell instead of bundled-up, taking in the lake views and ending the day in the sunshine reminds us why we love these mountains in the first place.
For those willing to extend the season just a little longer, Tahoe offers a quiet reward: some of the most beautiful ski days of the year.
Just don’t tell too many people. We’d like to keep this one our little secret.
